"Rhubarb” is a word chosen for producing indistinct background conversation by Extras because it contains no sharp or recognizable phonemes. Extras were often asked to mutter the word “rhubarb” to produce the effect of genuine conversation, with their mouths moving convincingly.

ALAN SMITHEE

"Alan Smithee” was a pseudonym used by members of the Directors Guild to distance themselves from films over which they were ultimately not able to exercise creative control; it was coined in 1968 and discontinued in 2000.

ABOVE THE LINE

$3,000

2 Tickets to the event

Quarter-page tribute in the official Program Guide

"Above the line” refers to the list of individuals who guide and influence the creative direction and process of a given film. These roles include and are not limited to Director, Producer, Writer, and Actors. The distinction originates from the early studio days when the budget top-sheet would literally have a line separating the above-the-line and below-the-line costs.

MACGUFFIN

$1,000

2 Tickets to the event

"MacGuffin” is a plot device that motivates the characters and advances the story, but has little other relevance to the story itself.  Alfred Hitchcock has been credited with coining the term and defined a MacGuffin as “the device, the gimmick, if you will, or the papers the spies are after... The only thing that really matters is that in the picture the plans, documents or secrets must seem to be of vital importance to the characters. To me, the narrator, they're of no importance whatsoever.”
